On a beautiful late spring afternoon, twenty-five years ago, two young men graduated from the same college. They were very much alike, these two young men. Both had been better than average students, both were personable and both – as young college graduates are – were filled with ambitious dreams for the future.
Recently, these men returned to their college for their 25th reunion.
They were still very much alike. Both were happily married. Both had three children. And both, it turned out, had gone to work for the same Midwestern manufacturing company after graduation, and were still there.
But there was a difference. One of the men was manager of a small department of that company. The other was its president.
What Made The Difference?
Have you ever wondered, as I have, what makes this kind of difference in people’s lives? It isn’t a native intelligence or talent or dedication. It isn’t that one person wants success and the other doesn’t.
The difference lies in what each person knows and how he or she makes use of that knowledge.
And that is why I am writing to you and to people like you about The Wall Street Journal. For that is the whole purpose of The Journal: to give its readers knowledge – knowledge that they can use in business.
The above story written by Martin Conroy, was used by the Wall Street Journal for 25 years starting in 1974.
So, what’s the point?
The point is,
“what you know and how you use that knowledge will definitely help you succeed in life.”
In fact, the Bible confirms this point…
I recently wrote an article about the most misquoted verse in the Bible. Proverbs 29 :18. The NIV version states “where there is no revelation, people perish”.
And Hosea 4:6 relays it this way, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me.”
I submit to you that it is not only what you know, it’s who you know. As Christ-followers we know God , have a relationship with Him, and even have knowledge through his Word about how to make use of our relationship.
The Problem is Not the News
The problem this newspaper agency has it NOT that there is “no news”. There is an abundance of news. Their problem is the fact that even though they are proclaiming the news of their knowledge, they still need subscriptions to succeed.
You may of heard of the Wall Street Journal but have you purchased a subscription?
Then, as the story suggests, you too have a problem; the lack of knowledge and how to correctly use it.
You didn’t know you had this problem, did you? Perhaps you never heard of the above letter. Perhaps you weren’t given an opportunity to even take a glance at the newspaper, much less subscribe to it.
The Gospel is not the problem. The problem is that NOT everyone has had an opportunity to hear the good news. In fact the majority, (42%) of the people in the entire world have this problem.
Although there is good news of salvation for everyone, the problem is that over 3 billion people have never had an opportunity to even hear of the name of Jesus Christ, much less to decide rather or not they want to follow him.
The problem is amplified by the fact that even though many Christ-followers have a knowledge of Christ they have done nothing to share their relationship with Christ with others.
Life is a preparation for eternity.
Just like the two college graduates in our story we will one day graduate into eternity. Once before God, he’ll ask us what we did what our knowledge of Christ. How did we apply it to our lives? With who did we share Christ?
The Wall Street Journal shared their knowledge with others, God requires us to do the same. So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God (Rom 14:12).
Knowledge is Power
I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Rom 1:16)
We have something far more powerful to share than mere newspaper articles.
When I was in Vietnam I shared a story from the Bible with a taxi driver. I was amazed when he told me he had never heard of a Bible and didn’t even know what it was. My life changed when I began to concentrate on giving people everywhere an opportunity to worship Christ.
Today I read the Bible when I woke up. In fact one of my favorite verses in the Bible is found in Romans 15:20:
It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known.
Is that your desire also?
Imagine Having Your Own Delivery Boy
It has been said, “It is better to use your brains than your brawns”.
For years, successful newspapers hired delivery boys to deliver the news to peoples’ doorsteps usually via a bicycle. Times have changed, but wise executives still know that they can’t effectively deliver the news all alone. They need the world-wide web as a modern means to broadcast the news.
You possess the incredible news of the Gospel and you want to effectively deliver your knowledge to as many people as possible.
How can you effectively share your knowledge of Christ with those who have never heard of Him?
If you’re already on our team you already know the benefits of our partnership. If not, I want to help you complete your mission by becoming your delivery boy. Right now I’m seeking wise individuals who will send us to entire families who are perishing because of this lack of revelation. In fact, I’ve dedicated my life to sharing the good news with lost people. Yes, you can subscribe to our newsletters (at no cost) but is there any reason why you can’t do more?
When you collaborate with us through prayers and financial giving you can be credited with seeing souls saved and disciples made. As we train leaders and plant new churches among the least reached peoples of the earth, you are part of this as well.
Is there any reason why we can’t partner together to share this awesome news?
Some estimated the previous story resulted in over $3 billion in sales for the paper. That’s an awesome return on investment. Can we put a price tag on a soul? Maybe 3 billion for every person who has never heard of Christ? Of course not, you and both know that a person’s eternal destiny is worth much more than money can buy. That said, the wise use of your money will help us make a difference as we train send and serve leaders who are going to places where these lost people live.
I cannot promise you that success will instantly be yours when you partner with us in sharing our knowledge of Christ. But I can promise that God will honor his Word as you lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(Matthew 6:19-21)
About those 2 college classmates I mentioned at the beginning of this article. They graduated college and started in the business world together. So what made their lives so different?
Knowledge and its application.
You know Christ. Now you know what to do.
Don’t delay. When you partner with us you’ll not only help spread the news, you’ll find purpose, become fulfilled and make a real difference in the world.
One Last Thought
One year from today, God willing, you will still be here on the planet. The question is, will anything in your life be significantly different? The answer: only if you do something significantly different.
Maybe this is that new thing you need to do.
